TOK 2: Day 7 (8/24)

Mabel the Bear

Let's start by debriefing on our experiences on the art walk to see "Mabel the Bear"

  • What were your general impressions?
  • What knowledge questions regarding Art as an Area of Knowledge?
  • How does the experience fit into our understanding of WOK and AOK?

What Makes Art Good?

Now, let's turn our attention to a question that arose during our initial discussion:
What is the role of judgement in art?
Start with this clip from Terry Zwigoff's Art School Confidential, based on the short comic by Daniel Clowes.

Now return to your "Art Starter" activity and look at the list of works of art that you generated.  For each work (or for all of them together), list some qualities (of the work, its production, its history?) that make the art worthy of being called art.

So the question is maybe not "Is it Art?" but "Is it Good?" and if so, "How can we claim to know such a thing?"

A Sociological Theory of Art Perception

I'm going to send you home today with a reading from French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Bourdieu has some (research based) ideas about where we find meaning, worth, and merit in art works. First, though, it may be worthwhile to know:
The reading is a bit heavy (Bourdieu is a Sociologist writing for Sociologists), but work to master the basic concepts in the piece.  He is writing about art, and where our ability to appreciate (and judge) art comes from.
